Is Fletcher a private, magnet, or charter school? Is there a fee for attending Fletcher?
No. Fletcher is a free public general education school in the Orange Unified School District. It is not a charter or magnet school, nor is there a fee to attend Fletcher. The Mandarin program exists alongside a traditional educational program.

How many students attend Fletcher? Will my child become “lost in the crowd”?
Fletcher is a small school with around 420 students. Each child is known to the administration and office staff and many parents think of Fletcher as more of a family than just a school.

What about parent involvement?
There are many opportunities for parent involvement at Fletcher both within the MIP and with Fletcher Elementary as a whole. The Fletcher PTA is an active, robust group serving all Fletcher students. Parents can volunteer both inside and outside of the classroom. For questions regarding the Fletcher PTA, please contact PTA President Julie Lee at FletcherPTAPresident@gmail.com.

What extracurricular activities does Fletcher offer?
Fletcher offers a variety of extracurricular activities for students. Our music program serves students starting in TK, the only Orange Unified school to provide a complete program. Art Masters education is provided, and many of our students participated in the PTA Art Reflections Competition. Fletcher hosts a STEM club including a Vex Robotics team and a Science Olympiad team. Students can participate in the 100-Mile Club for fitness. The Global Culture Education Foundation, an outside group, offers an after-school Mandarin enrichment program for all students for an additional fee.

What are OUSD’s plans for the future of the Mandarin Immersion Program?
Students entering the immersion program will become part of an immersion strand of study that culminates in Advanced Placement Chinese and college-level coursework as they work to achieve advanced level proficiency with the opportunity to earn a  Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation from High School. Students graduating from Fletcher Elementary will move to Cerro Villa Middle School and Villa Park High School as part of the Mandarin Immersion Program.

What is Fletcher’s Mandarin Immersion Program Vision?
Fletcher’s Mandarin Immersion students will be uniquely equipped with bilingual and bicultural skills to successfully compete in the global economy of the 21st Century.

Do Fletcher’s state test scores represent the Mandarin Immersion Program?
No, Fletcher’s state test scores do not represent all of the students enrolled in the Mandarin Immersion Program; 2015 was the first year that Mandarin Immersion students reached 3rd grade and were included in the assessment. Like all California schools, Fletcher is in a state of transition regarding student assessment following the adoption of a new state test. The following is quoted from the news release from the California Department of Education, which can be found in its entirety here: http://www.cde.ca.gov/nr/ne/yr15/yr15rel69.asp

Because 2015 is the first year of the new tests and because they are substantially different from their predecessors, [State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson] said the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results will serve as a baseline from which to measure future progress and should not be compared to results from the state’s previous assessments, the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program.

As with every school, state assessments are only one part of an overall educational experience. If you have any questions regarding the academic rigor of the Mandarin Immersion Program or education at Fletcher as a whole, please feel free to contact Principal Sara Pelly at (714) 997-6181 or spelly@orangeusd.org.
